In order to search systematically for a new idea, a written definition of what a new idea should be developed for is written. An independent term unrelated to the task is compared to the problem. Four to six characteristics are noted for this term. Then the connection to the initial topic is established and the features transferred. This whole process can be repeated with new independent terms.
